Working safely and doing it well in construction
Ross started his construction business nine years ago. It began as a small team of five people doing high-end restoration work in South East Melbourne. As the business grew and took on bigger jobs, safety paperwork and legal responsibilities became harder to manage.
Ross knew safety was important, but as the business expanded, it became clear that he needed expert help to stay on top of it.
After an incident at work, where a staff member was injured using a nail gun, safety inspectors visited the site. This was a wake-up call. Ross realised the business needed better safety systems in place. That’s when Ross joined the OHS Essentials Program.
Carmel Peterson, a safety expert from Master Builders Association of Victoria (an approved provider), visited the workplace, walked through the site, and helped Ross understand exactly what needed to be done. Together, they created a clear safety action plan. Carmel stayed in touch, visited three times, and provided simple, practical guidance that suited Ross’s business.
The program ensured Ross and his employees are well prepared and had all the necessary documentations to back them when things went wrong.
